Nostalgia Ice cream is not a fashion ice cream or an Instagram set. Much more valuable than that: since 1954, the same family has been making ice cream here in the same place based on their own recipes. This is no longer just hospitality, but one of Fonyód's living family traditions.
The story began with an uncle and his wife who came from Kaposvár to Fonyód. They didn't just make ice cream, they made chocolate figures and candy. Ferenc Lovizer learned the craft from them, and then he continued to work with his wife. Later on, their daughter and pastry chef's learned grandchild were involved, so nostalgia is now a real multi-generation family business.
Their ice cream does not follow the Italian direction that is almost everywhere today. They have a different texture, they taste more recognizable, and we don't feel like the same foundation has been changed to 20 different shades. The old family recipes were kept, but they're also bravely experimenting. In addition to the classic chocolate, vanilla, curd and fruit flavors, lavender, bodice, lemon grass, sand thorns and even brisket ice cream have been prepared. The Retro ice cream with oily seeds and barbecue, and the chocolate peach makes two familiar flavors just like its name, so that it really does make sense.
In particular, they have great strength in the milk-free selection. There is not only one lemon sorbet placed on the edge of the counter, which can be selected from several water based flavors without milk. There are also no sugar and gluten options, so those who follow a special diet don't necessarily have to leave empty-handed. Of course, in case of the current offer and possible cross-contamination, you should always ask locally.
And yes, extra whipped cream is available at any time. Do we have to say more than that?
Maybe even that nostalgia didn't become a local legend because it was well built around the story. It was the other way round: there were decades of work, constant quality and recognizable taste, then a serious local fan camp formed around it. Some have been returning for 15 years every summer, and others who carry on with them one of the most important relics of their vacation in Fonyód. The place is also included in the Best of Balaton selection, fully deserved.
The ice-cream shop is located in the Lower Sea, below 37 József Attila utca, which means you don't bump into it directly on the central promenade. There's a bit of a start for it, but that's the point: people don't just fall in here by accident, they come by purpose. Free parking, terrace, bicycle storage and dog friendly environment will also help you stay comfortable for a second dumplings.
If you're just trying one ice cream shop in Fonyód, we think this is it. It's not the latest trend, it's almost three quarters of a century experience behind every dumpling. One of Fonyód's pride - absolutely deserved.
