Our opinion

Lokal at is a new player in the Lake neighbourhood and one of the rare places that would be unfair to squeeze into a single category. As a coffee shop and an ice cream shop, you can be on both our lists.

It's already on the outside. From the yellow to green scene, we thought of Brazil for the first time, which is a perfectly appropriate association at a coffee shop. It's bright, playful, modern, but it doesn't turn into a plastic Instagram set. And when you enter, it turns out that they didn't just take design seriously.

Coffee setup is quite brilliant. La Marzocco Linea machine, various Casino Mocca coffee, extra light and medium roasting, suitable grates and baristas who can also use all this. La Marzocco, of course, does not make a good espresso on its own, as does an expensive oven for dinner, but here behind the technique is real expertise. The team is supported by Zsolt Vida, an award-winning barista and Bende Laura, so the special inscription is not just marketing decoration on the wall.

In addition to the classic espresso-based drinks, you can also choose from various grain coffee, vegetable milk and decaffeinated versions. Cold brew is also being prepared, and the filter is not a morning-cooked, forgotten batch brew. V60 is prepared by hand, so it also makes sense to sit in if you want to taste a light-roasted coffee with fruity, flowery or chocolate. This is really the coffee-loving playground now.

Ice cream is at least as serious a commitment. They work with the milk of fresh Hungarian tarks and jersey cows, without artificial flavourings or unnecessary additives. Fruit varies with seasons, and a large proportion of raw materials come from local or domestic producers. The aim is not to line up 20 flamboyant-colored ice creams next to each other, which in the end give about the same sweet taste.

In addition to certain classics, items appear that make the place interesting especially for adult ice cream fans. The poppy ice is made of organic, rolled berries, and the curd comes from the Míves Milky Manufa, and the hazelnut is used in Lake Balaton and Boglar Turkish nuts. With hours of this work, they make their own peanut butter. You can also meet pine, pumpkin seed, poppy, white chocolate nuts, seasonal fruit lines and chocolate from different production areas.

They cook vanilla ice cream for hours, not just mix a finished aroma into the foundation. This may sound less spectacular than the pine industry, but it turns out in these boring flavors how seriously an ice cream shop takes itself. In Múu, a dumpling vanilla or poppy can be an independent program.

Behind the place is Zsolt Matoltsy and Erika Gögert. Zsolt deals with rural development and agro-tourism, so he has established a personal relationship with farmers in the area. Erika has come from a family of confectioners, and the family business has been operating in Nagykanizn for over 40 years. Ice cream and cakes are currently made there, but in the longer term they want to create their own plant in Fonyód. Ice cream is also taught by a Tuscan organic ice-cream master - that is, the background here is significantly more serious than what a show counter put together for summer season would suggest.

In addition to coffee and ice cream, you can also find combucha, water cake, quality fiber tea, producer syrup and light evening drinks. You can buy honey, jam and coffee in the small deli. The place is dog friendly and can be paid with a credit card, and the terrace can also be comfortably positioned for a longer conversation or some laptop work.

The MÚU opened only in the spring of 2026, but now European Coffee Trip has included it on its international map of specialty cafés and Street Kitchen has written about it as one of the best new ice-cream shops at Lake Balaton. Of course, these are just external confirmation. The more important evidence is in the cup and funnel.

If you had lunch or dinner at the Lokal, it's almost mandatory to come over for coffee or ice cream. But it's worth going for in itself. In Fonyód, you can find good coffee and great ice cream - the speciality of MOU is that you get both here on the same counter without compromise.

Address: 8640 Fonyód, Thököly utca 98.
Summer opening hours: Monday - Friday 9: 00 -21: 00, Saturday 8: 30-21: 00
Let's guess: Ask for a V60 and a dumplings of poppy or boglar nuts. If you're just "a regular coffee," there's a good chance the visit will be longer.
