The Barbakán Café is not a world-class speciality, it is worth clarifying in advance. We don't come here because of light-roasted Ethiopian coffee, lab-tested recipes and the latte art designed for Instagram. This is a long-running, simple, friendly place in the centre of Fonyód that reliably performs the role the city needs.
Located at the corner of Dísz Square, close to the market, railway station and most central locations in the city. It's easy to put it on the road during a shopping, market or city walk, but it's also perfect for a meeting point. Its central location and its annual opening-up make it particularly valuable: when Balaton goes into a quieter mode in winter, and most of the summer restaurants close, Barbakán remains a warm and homey little place.
Coffee, cakes, sweet and salty snacks, grilled sandwiches, lemonade and simpler refreshments are the backbone of the supply. Sugar-free cakes and coffee with various kinds of milk are also available. It is not a gastronomic expedition to be expected, but fair prices and familiar flavours. That's why the schoolchildren in the neighborhood love it: it doesn't necessarily take a small fortune to sit somewhere, eat or drink something and spend some time together.
In summer, the classic curled-up soft ice cream and the iceberg bring back a Lake Balaton feeling that does not require pistachio cream or edible gold dust. A funnel-twisted ice cream sometimes knows more: it brings back summers of childhood, walks from the beach and sticky fingers. And in winter, you can go to the other end, your hot chocolate, which we think is one of the best arguments in the place - dense, sweet, warm and comforting, just like a regular hot chocolate should be.
Barbaka is not a place for us to travel to Fonyód on our own. But if you're here, you're looking for an affordable cafe in the center or you want to get warm in winter, it's a very useful and lovable choice. In summer for the curled-up ice cream, in winter for the unbeatable hot chocolate - and in the middle of the day because it is always possible to expect it.
