The Ackos don't want to make a gastro revolution. You're not Fermenting, you're not deconstructing, and you probably won't be desperate if someone just wants a fried meat with fries. This is a classic, plastered restaurant - and it's one of the few places where the cube tablecloth isn't retro design, but has always been there.
In fact, no one in Fonyód will tell you the exact address. The Ackos are behind SPAR. That's the address, there is no need for more precise directions. It is also easy to reach from the centre, railway station, market and city free beach, but it is a little out of the biggest summer foot traffic. Therefore, it is also a good reserve when all the terraces around the port have been filled.
The menu does not want to prove that the Hungarian cuisine is actually something else. Meat soup, fish juice, catfish, fried meat, pork stew, duck roast, woodland tree herb, pancakes and somloes: familiar dishes, understandable portions, without any explanation. Its old favorites include ham, mushrooms, bacon, onions, leech and cheese, and piglets and ducks made in the oven.
Maybe the menu hasn't changed much in decades. But neither are the flavors, and in this case it's not necessarily criticism. There are restaurants where we go to surprise us, and there are restaurants to make sure they don't. You order broth, you get broth. You don't have to listen to the history of the fish when it comes to catfish. And pancakes are still pancakes, not "reconsidered dessert."
Doses are rarely complained of. In the older and newer guest opinions, there is a return to fast, polite service, an abundant choice and a reasonable price-value ratio. Do not expect the most exciting gastronomic experience in Fonyód, and do not expect the same peak performance from every course. The power of Ackos is not a perfectly polished concept, it's that almost everyone in a larger family can find something to eat with good heart.
The size of the place is adapted to this: in addition to the smaller interior there are large, covered areas and a shadowy garden area, so it also works for family meals and larger companies. They also offer special children's meals, vegetarian choices and a daily menu. You can also get in with a dog, you can have both credit cards and FEMA cards, and nearby you can find a bicycle storage and parking area.
The long story of Makkos is not just local nostalgia. The restaurant was awarded the Balatoni Protective Table in 2012and its owner, Péter Makkos, received recognition for his work on catering training in 2021 for Somogy. So, while there hasn't been any radical activity in the guest space for decades, generations have learned the trade here.
This is not a first date flashing restaurant and it's not a pilgrimage place for gastro-tourists. It's an old-fashioned, reliable restaurant in Fonyód where you sit when you don't want to overthink dinner. Friendly service, familiar flavors, decent doses - sometimes that's exactly what it takes.
Local address: right behind SPAR, on the street of János Hunyadi
Telephone: +36 20 326 4965
Opening hours: changes seasonally and should therefore be checked by telephone or social media before departure
Let's guess: The Makkos, the cataphernics and the kiln dishes show what this place is all about.
