A trip to Kaposvár
Kaposvár is a good answer to the day when you've seen Balaton as sunny, windy and rainy, and you want something quite different. Not another beach, lookout or beach buffet, but a real town trip: nice downtown, serious cultural heritage, market, theater, bath and so many programs that one day probably doesn't fit into everything.
It is directly accessible from Fonyód on the 36th railway route, about an hour depending on the travel flight. There is no need to choose a driver, find a parking place or argue who will drive home: you can take off in Fonyód and walk from the Kaposvár station to downtown. You should always check your current departure. MÁV's scheduleBecause on the 36th line there are different timescales and track locks that can interfere with travel.
If you arrive in the morning, it's worth going to the Kaposvár Grand Market first. The train station is about eight minutes' walk and shows much more of the city than a quick shopping trip. Between vegetables, fruit, meat, cheeses, bakery products and local portals, you can tune in to Somogyra while you're surrounded by the Kaposvár weekdays. It wasn't built as a tourist attraction, which is why it's interesting: they don't show it here but use the city.
From here, the historical center is conveniently available. Kossuth Square, Main Street and the surrounding pedestrian streets together give Kaposvár's most beautiful face. Century turns, historizing and secession facades, shadowy branches, terraces and little details. It is worth going slowly, sometimes looking up, because the downstairs windows begin over the really exciting city. The main square consists of the Church and City Hall, and in the surrounding streets you will find museums, galleries, cafés or a suitable dining area in just a few minutes. The downtown of Kaposvár is not huge, and it's what makes it lovable: it can be accessed, but it doesn't run out in 20 minutes.
The Chiky Gergely Theatre is worth walking to even if you don't have a lecture that day. The renovated building is one of Kaposvár's most characteristic sights, and the company has been a special place in Hungarian theatre life for a long time. If you're planning to move forward, look at the theater for the current show: an evening show can easily be converted into a full-day trip to Kaposvár. Listen to me. In the summer, theatrical programs are usually rarer than during the season.
However, in the town of József Riplet-Rónai, the most powerful cultural station is Rome's villa. It's not just a few paintings hanging side by side, it's the artist's old home with original furniture, personal objects and an ancient park surrounding the house. The reason this place works so well is because Rippl- Rónai here does not become a textbook name, but a real person who had a home, garden, taste and quite unique world. The villa is located further from the center on Fodor József Street, so take a longer walk, local flight or a short taxi ride. Before we leave, also check your opennessBecause in front of a place like this, finding a locked door is especially annoying.
If you're here with children, or if half of the family wants paintings and water, the flower bath is a strong diplomatic choice. There is a covered experience bath with rolling corridor, children's pool and experience elements, along with a spa, wellness and swimming pool, and an outdoor beach in summer. Therefore, it is not just a rain programme: it must be a life-belt in dire weather and a full family bath in heat. The opening of departments may differ, so it is worth seeing before buying tickets to Current information about the flower bath.
In sunny weather, you can choose another Kaposar. Deseda Lake, located in the northern part of town, is one of the most important excursions for locals, surrounded by about 14,5 km bicycle routes, rest areas and lookout points. The Black István Visiting Center, which forms a boat on the eastern side of the lake, presents an interactive exhibition of water and forest life in the area with huge aquarium and programs for children. The Deeda is no longer a downtown walk: you can take the local bus, taxi or bike and leave it at least half a day. Do not push the whole lake between two museums and a bath, because it will no longer be a field trip but a tour of performance.
A rainy day works well in the market - downtown - Rome - villa - Flower bath order. In the sun, you should go to the historical center, have lunch somewhere around the pedestrian street, then choose the Rome villa or the Dédeda. And if they play a good show at the Chiky tonight, you might even start looking at home next morning instead of the last train.
Kaposvár is not "instead of Balaton." It is good that it gives a whole different world an hour away from the coast: a real city with real stories, strong cultural life and programs that make it not only worth thinking of as a backup solution for a rainy day. It is comfortably available from Fonyód, shows a lot of itself in one day, but it remains enough to have something to go back to.
