It is not only the wine that makes it worth going up to Kishegy in Balatonlelle - but wine obviously helps the experience. A half-hour trip from Fonyód, yet a different world: vineyards, winding little roads, old press houses and Lake Balaton panorama opening from the top of the hill. It's not for a reason that the locals refer to it as "the Southern Coast Badacsony."
Kishegy is not made up of a single winery, but of smaller or larger wineries, restaurants and terraces. You can have a more serious wine tasting program, but it's still a good choice if you just eat something, drink a glass of wine and then watch the Badacsony for a long time. The panorama and the cellars share the experience.
Make sure you write down three names.
M Maythényi Prészház She's standing on one of the most beautiful spots in Mount Kisses. The pressing house, the cellar and the Baroque Saint Donate chapel next to it were built in 1784 by the Majthényi family. From the terrace in a clear time, the vast phase of Balaton is visible, from Keszthely's direction to Balatonfürd, and Badacsony is almost as the main player on the horizon. In the old cellar, the red wines of the Kitchen family matured in barrique barrels and there is a restaurant and wine shop upstairs. It is worth sitting in here even if not all members of the company want a serious wine tasting: food, historical environment and panorama alone are sufficient reasons.
M Kitchen Winery located in one of the quieter valleys of Kishegy. One of the most famous two-generation family wineries in South Balaton, where Dániel Konyár now carries on his work built by his father János Konyár. Blueberry and red wines are particularly important on the property; their best known items include Loliense marriage. The winery is working on gravity processing, which means the grapes and wine are moved as little as possible by pumping. This is the most "winery" stop of the three places: if you want a real, guided taste, you will definitely arrive here with an early appointment.
M Mountain Wine Terrace It's a looser, Mediterranean atmosphere that has been operating on Mount Kishegy since 1998. The view from the terrace and garden is beautiful, and it is particularly difficult to get up from the table near sunset. In addition to the wines, they also offer cooked and Hungarian dishes, wine skates, children's menus, homemade surfers and fruit juices. The grape marc pancakes alone are interesting enough to make room for dessert. This could be a good choice with family or company where not everyone is a desperate wine enthusiast.
You don't necessarily have to squeeze all three places into one afternoon. The Kitchen is a prearranged tasting, the Majthényi historical press house and panoramic restaurant, and the Mountain Wine Terrace is a longer place to sit and dine. Pick two, give me time for the landscape, and don't make a performance tour of the wine.
Always check for opening and tasting in advance. The Cellar Winery specifically requests an appointment, the Mountain Wine Terrace operates seasonally, typically in spring and autumn only on weekends. The Majthényi summer is usually open every day, but a table is also worth booking there.
The driver's question is solved before the first glass. The road up to Kishegen is winding, and the places are outside, so the "then we'll call someone" plan doesn't always work well. Whether it's a designated driver or a preordered taxi back and forth. You can get by train to Balatonlella, but from there it is worth a ride forward.
Wine is important on Mount Small, but not exclusive. The view of vineyards, old chapel, press houses and Badacsony is worth the journey without alcohol. The wine just makes sure you stay a little longer.
