The Lake Balaton is quite different from the water. There are no garden umbrellas, beach bays and parking cars in front of you, only the lake, the horizon and the strange silence that you can never really experience from the beach. The Balaton is even more special from the water and with a dog.
The SUPport works directly at the Fonyód Dog Bath, so you don't have to come with your own board, pump and half a garage. You can rent SUP, start-ups can get help for the first try, and sometimes they drive, they organize sunset paddles. There are also programmes for beginners and dogs.
If you've never been on SUP before, that's not an option. The first minutes can be spent on their knees, knowing how to move the board, finding balance, and then standing up. It's not a race, and you don't have to row towards the horizon at first sight. It is a great experience to get away from the beach and then look back at Fonyód from Lake Balaton.
The braver dogs can also board with their four-legged companion. Of course, it would not hurt to have a dog like water, able to stay calm in one place, and do not think that every passing waterbird should be pursued immediately. The SUPport team has been reported to be patient in helping to meet; even the Czechoslovak wolf dogs' owners have reported particularly good experiences with them.
The location is almost ideal for this. In Fonyód was the first official dog-friendly beach at Lake Balaton, with more than 10,000 square meters of grassland, shadowy parts and more water entrance for dogs. Before or after the SUP, the dog can run out, swim out, and you can stay on the beach for a while longer.
Sunset rowing is a particularly good choice. The air is now less hot, the water is calmer and the mountains of Badacsony and the north coast are showing a very different face from the board. If you're lucky with the lights, it can easily be one of the best shared memories of your vacation - and there's a good chance that it's one of your funniest photos.
However, SUP is a highly weather- and wind-dependent program. Just because the weather seems pleasant on the beach doesn't mean the water's too strong, so check with the rental company before you leave. If they say it's not safe to go that day, listen to them: Balaton will not run out.
SUPport is typically at the dog's bathroom, but it can be adapted to weather and programs. Write or call in advance, especially if you are planning to row dog or sunset.
And if it's not beach time? I will. Until then, at least you have a good reason to come back to Fonyód.
