There is a bicycle section in Fonyód that should be one of Balaton's pride. Between Belatelep and the city beach, the landscape adds everything: water, mountains, Lake Balaton lights. It's an emblematic place. It's something a cyclist would like to tell at home: that is why it is worth turning around the lake.
Compared to this, the Fonyód Bike Road receives the weakest evaluation in the recent survey of the Hungarian Bicycle Club. The distance between the two is one of the most important tourist issues in the city.
What does the survey really say?
According to the Hungarian Bike Bicycle Club's communication of September 4, 2026, Fonyód average 3,50 points out of 10This is the last of the municipal ranks. Zánka 3.58, Balatonakali is followed by 3.69; at the top of the list there are 8.07 points. There are also one of the most comprehensive complaints from Fonyód.
It is important to be precise: this is an assessment of road quality and safety, not accident statistics or a referendum for all cyclists. The settlement score is not only a grade between the Belatelep and the urban beach. Nor can we say that Fonyód is far behind. However, the last place to rank is a pretty serious signal in itself. The orange barrier cannot be the business card of Fonyód
In my local experience, the state of the intestinal tract today is unworthy of its environment. The worn-out orange limits, the proximity of the road and railway, the construction of the road gives me more anxiety than a sense of safety. I don't want to find myself looking at the possible consequences of an uncertain move while someone passing by.
This is a personal user impression, not a technical opinion. That is why we need a public section-by-stage status test: what needs to be improved on the hull, where there is insufficient space, in which state are the separation elements and how to make the passage safer?
The bicycle guest watches Fonyód from his own government. Not from an investment fund. It can be a beautiful sight when you're waiting for it to finally get over the unpleasant part. But we want you to stop, look around, have lunch, and next time take more time for the city.
Fonyód can develop. The promenade is a good example.
The renewal of the Szaploncay, or Panorama promenade, is a positive example to me. It builds on one of the city's most powerful features: the sight that is not to be imagined, only in a worthy environment. In such a place, the well-managed public area is itself a tourist value.
The series of improvements is longer. The 2023 summary also presents the Arpád coast runway, water block and playground renovation, new facilities on the central beach, as well as the development of the promenade and café. These are investments for different purposes and financing. It cannot be counted as if any aid could be transferred freely to the bike road. However, urban priorities can and must still be discussed. In addition to the new facility, the existing road, railing, washroom and roadmap will require constant attention.
The Prészház: the responsibility begins after purchase
For me, the long-term settlement after purchase is a negative example of the Prészház. The preservation of a historical building is a meaningful community goal. However, this also requires a plan of maintenance, conservation and realistic exploitation.
According to Sonline's report of 10 May 2026, the planned tenant renovation will not find an entrepreneur and the building will be flooded, so the city will allocate HUF 4- 5 million for urgent roof repairs. The communication also mentions a visitor's central vision, without providing a source of implementation. The May report on the House of Prészház.
The article does not allow for September preparedness. The legitimate question is therefore: where is the roof repair now, what condition is the building in and when can you see the next step that can be financed? In a house bought for safekeeping, stopping deterioration can't wait an unlimited period of time to realize a larger dream.
The dog's bathroom already proves it. The basics have to work.
In the News Balaton interview on September 6, the mayor reports this year's revenue over HUF 46 million at the dog spa. This is revenue, not profit: operations involve significant costs. In the same interview, there is also a lack of dressing room and a recurring problem in the bathroom.
Developments must also be added to the picture: benches, dog wash, and according to the mayor, 80 trees planted in civil assembly. The declaration shall also include the planned waste water pipeline replacement for the following year and the examination of the possibility of changing rooms. So the question is, when does popularity become a reliable basic service? The guest with the dog needs a working bathroom, a proper shadow and an orderly environment. The growth of trees requires time; we would like to see a specific deadline for the other tasks.
You have to drive the guest to Mount Sipos-
The surroundings and approach of the Sipos- mountain lookout should also be seen with a first-coming eye. As a local, it's easy to know where to go. The guest needs a clear signal at the right branch, useful information at the beginning of the route and a well-kept environment on site.
My impression is that directions don't get as much attention as this place deserves. I wouldn't start by figuring out another attraction: first, I would look at how easy it is to find and use the one that exists. For a visitor-friendly route, the tables, path, rest areas and current visitor information are included together.
In addition to the public volume, you can also see work
There may be a substantial debate on noise, events and direction of development. The privacy of the residents is important, and the operation of a town of tourism is the same. However, what matters to me as a representative is what will be better on the street after this debate.
In addition to a spectacular sharing or an image created with artificial intelligence, the repair deadline should also be available. How many problems can we solve? Which one gets responsible? Where's the meeting? What's going on? For the guest on a bicycle road, there will be appreciable results.
I would like to read regular, short reports by Members on concrete commitments and results. Things that can be determined in three months' time if we move forward.
Five questions that would be good to get a public answer
- Who is the owner and manager of troubled Fonyód cycling sections, and which organisation is responsible?
- Do you have a recent technical health check and what immediate improvements do you justify?
- What is the timetable and source to improve the section between Belatelep and the urban beach?
- Where is it going to be to settle the basic infrastructure of a dog's bathroom and preserve the Prashouse?
- Do existing tourist locations in the city receive a public maintenance plan which can be asked for annually?
The cooperation of several actors may be required when meeting road, rail and bicycle infrastructure. The precise clarification of operator responsibility is therefore the first step. I expect an initiative, consistent consultation and understandable information from the city.
I love Fonyód, and I would also like to offer it with a good heart to anyone who arrives on a bicycle. The panorama is given. The guests are interested. The task is to make the way you come here worthy of what you see here.
The next good news in Fonyód could be that we're gonna fix what we already have.
