Where do we start?
Lower water, shorter trips, longer season and increasingly demanding guests. The future of Balaton is not just about how many centimeters the water meter shows, but also whether we are finally able to release a vacation model that no longer exists.
- On August 3, the official average water station at Lake Balaton was 55 centimeters. A few weeks earlier, we talked about values above 70, and in spring the water level of around 90 centimeters was unusually low.
It is important to add: 55 centimeters does not mean that Balaton is on average 55 centimetres deep. The water station is linked to a fixed measuring zero point - the average depth of Lake Balaton remains several metres. However, the number is a warning and Current data of the National Directorate-General for Water based on how quickly you can change the position of the lake in a hot, dry summer.
The question is therefore not whether Balaton will still be next year. I will.
The real question is what it's gonna be like - and what we're going to do with it.
You don't have to bury Lake Balaton. But it's not worth looking the other way.
Balaton has always been a changing water-level shallow lake. Natural fluctuations are part of the ecosystem, and there is no automatic ecological disaster from a single year with low water standing.
However, longer-term processes are more difficult to sweep aside. According to the summary of the HUN- REN Balaton Limnological Research Institute, nine years were between 2000 and 2022 when the natural water change in Lake Balaton was negative. So the rain on the lake and the flow of it did not make up for the water lost by evaporation. In the past, years like this were much more rare. Researchers say that extreme water-economy situations have become more frequent and that there has been an increase in the deficit of water finances. M summary of research institute It's not a panic, it's a preparation.
Balaton will not disappear overnight. It is much more likely that we are increasingly meeting extremely low or high water levels, unusually hot water, intensive ventilation periods and coastal sections which are harder to use in the usual way.
You can't answer that with one lock, one campaign or one good season's hope.
If there's less water, why does Lake Balaton stay attractive?
First of all, from what no water meter can show us.
The light from Balaton. The silhouette of Badacsony. The evening atmosphere of the ports, railway stations, markets, sightseeing, mountainous areas, wine cellars and the strange feeling that it slows down at night.
The Balaton was never just a bathroom. For a long time, it was more comfortable pretending to be one.
The beach remains an essential part of the experience. You can't tell the guest that shallow, warm water or hard-to-reach coastline doesn't matter because he'll look at the view instead. Water quality, beach status, shadow, clean bathroom, accessibility and natural coastlines are important.
But the future of Balaton will be truly resistant if it is not exclusively made up of daily beach.
Fonyód has a very good gift for this. Here is the market, the Panorama promenade, Sipos- mountain, port, dog bath, wine houses in nearby Kishegy, bicycle opportunities, one of the most beautiful mountain views on the south coast and a city structure in which you can still discover something from the old lake.
So we have the raw material. The question is whether to make a real, easy-to-find offer and complete the whole weekend.
The nostalgia value. But it's not a business model in itself.
One of the most powerful attractions of Balaton is a common memory. Almost everyone has a childhood beach, a buffet, a holiday home, a typical railway station or a story about how their shoulders burned down after a full day's bath.
You can't throw that away. Retro atmosphere, old villas, fish ovens, markets and the simplicity of Lake Balaton are real values.
But it's very easy to confuse nostalgia with needlessness.
The guest may enjoy the Lake Balaton atmosphere of the '70s, but it does not necessarily want a' 70s bathroom, equipment or service. He wants to eat fiery, but at a clean table with normal materials and predictable openings. You can enjoy the atmosphere of old holiday homes, but you also expect a good bed, working climate, fast internet and easy booking.
Nostalgia could be our story. However, the quality of our services cannot remain nostalgic.
The phrase 'we have always done this' could be more dangerous for the future of Balaton than a weak season.
How does the hospitality in Balaton have to improve?
Not every restaurant in Balaton has to become a fine dinning place, and not every buffet has to put an artisanal fermented carrot into the burger.
Most guests want something simpler than this: correct food, fair price, clean environment, normal service.
One of the biggest problems in Lake Balaton hospitality is not necessarily a price level, but an unpredictability between price and experience. An expensive meal can also be a good experience if quality, environment and attention are justified. However, it is difficult to defend when the guest pays a high price for mediocre food, precarious opening or tired service.
In the following years, places which:
- provide accurate and up-to-date information on their opening;
- payment of cards and quick payments;
- they are not trying to make hundreds of foods in moderation;
- provide a consistent and consistent quality that can be undertaken;
- watching the arrival of children and dogs;
- they are willing to open at least on weekends in the spring and autumn;
- cooperate with local accommodation and programme organisers;
- not as a one-time tourist, but as a returning guest, the person who enters them is treated.
The four-season Balaton will not be real if there is a sign on the door in October. Something must be open in October.
Hotels must also let go of the old schedule
For a long time, the Lake Balaton model was natural: vacation from Saturday to Saturday, one or two weeks in one, large families and friendly societies, predictable tours.
This world hasn't completely disappeared, but that's not what the entire market is built on anymore.
According to the tourist summary of KSH in 2025, more than 70% of Hungary's travel trips were given overnight visits. In national terms, the number of guest nights has broken record. So people haven't given up on travel - they start more often, for shorter periods. M KSH data There is a clear change of lifestyle behind it.
A guest often doesn't make a full week today. Maybe he's coming for two nights' cause there's a concert. It stops on the way for one night. He's having a long weekend with his dog. Friday afternoon, he decides to leave after all. Other times instead of a family holiday, you choose three to four shorter holidays during the year.
That's why we started thinking about smaller, independent apartments. Not because we want to give less, but because we have measured that there are fewer companies moving together and fewer and fewer people automatically booking for one or two full weeks.
We can't just wait for seven-day guests. We can't say it's not worth opening for a night or two. The guest's travel habits will not adapt to our old tour system.
We have to adapt to them.
This means more cleaning, more flexible arrival, faster communication and more serious organisation. At the same time, it also gives us the opportunity to try not only to make a living in six or eight summer weeks.
The state-of-the-art hotel in Balaton, we think:
- may be reserved for short stay;
- provide a simple and rapid arrival;
- is truly clean and reliable;
- show exactly what the guest gets;
- be able to accept small companies economically;
- does not consider good internet, climate or cultured bathroom as a special favor;
- help you choose a program, restaurant, beach and excursion;
- He's not just giving us a key, he's giving us access to the neighborhood.
We're developing in this direction. We create smaller, independent apartments, we also receive short reservations and all our accommodation is dog friendly. Meanwhile, we are also trying to show you what is worth doing in Fonyód beyond the beach.
We're not saying we have the only right answer. But we're sure that nothing changes is no longer an answer.
Can spring and autumn weekends be filled?
Yeah. But it's not just cheaper room prices.
The guest doesn't go to Balaton in November because he gets the same thing as in July, only in a coat. You'll have to get a different experience.
In the spring and autumn, wine tours, thematic markets, smaller concerts, gastronomic weekends, guided walks, bike events, dog programs, sightseeing tours, local history programmes and weekends that are built around a single understandable thought.
The longer season of Balaton does not mean that every weekend a festival must be held in each settlement. I'd rather have at least one good reason to travel at all times.
However, the programme itself is not enough for this. You need restaurant, coffee shop, accommodation, rain program, accurate information, route plan and communication that will not be posted on a Facebook post the night before the event.
The guest doesn't buy seven days today. He's looking for a reason for the next forty-eight hours.
If we tell him that reason in time and well, he'll go.
The municipalities must not be simple posters.
The programme organisers of the Lake Balaton cities and villages have a huge responsibility. They don't just have to organise events, they have to make full weekends meaningful.
A good programme calendar alone is tourist infrastructure.
Make it search, use it on your cell phone and plan for months in advance. Make it an exact time, location, map route, ticket information and rain site. You can click on a date and see what happens in the city immediately.
The events have to be coordinated. A concert will bring real tourist results if the guest can have dinner first, then get home and find something the next morning that won't leave immediately.
It is worth building recurring, recognizable events. Not necessarily big ones. A good sunset concert series, regular gastropicac, wine weekend or thematic urban walk can be worth more in the longer term than an expensive one-off event, whose name nobody remembers next year.
It is also the responsibility of the municipalities to connect the actors. The host, the hostess, the winemaker, the market, the cultural institution and the programme planner. In the eyes of the visitor, these are not separate businesses and offices. Together they form the experience you call Fonyód, Balatonpines or Badacsony.
It needs to be developed - but it doesn't matter how
Development can't mean that the whole beach is being paved down, we're putting an apartment house in place of all old buildings and covering up what people originally came here for.
The value of Balaton is given by the landscape, openness, reeds, old villas, small streets and local characters. The task of development is not to replace them, but to make it more usable and accessible.
We need modern bathrooms, shadowy public spaces, bicycle infrastructure, clean beaches, better information, cultural hospitality and programs independent of weather. Less spectacular investment, more consistent little details.
For the guest, it is often not the new space stone that represents progress, but also to find the program, the café is open, the bathroom is clean, there is shadow, there is a purchase of tickets and someone answers your question in time.
The future of Balaton is not entirely dependent on Lake Balaton.
You can argue water supply, level control, dredging and shore protection. These are important questions for professionals.
However, tourism operators do not have to wait until all scientific and water problems are resolved.
We have to decide what kind of service we're giving. We need to prepare for short journeys, the unpredictable season and the increasingly conscious guests. Now is the time to learn how to cooperate, communicate precisely and give real reasons for your trip to spring or fall.
The biggest risk of Balaton may not in itself be that a water meter shows 55 centimeters on the morning of August.
It is if we continue to answer that with the same offer as we did 20 or 30 years ago.
The lake is changing. The travelers have changed.
Now it's our turn.
